There are awards that are agiven by the Board of Governors rather than the voting members.  These awards are given when deserved, so some are awarded one year and not other years.

There are awards that are given by the Board of Governors rather than the voting members.  These awards are presented when deserved, so some are awarded one year and not other years.
 

The Irving G Thalberg Memorial Award:

is given to „a creative producer who has been responsible for a consistently high quality of motion picture productionš
 

The Gordon E Sawyer Award:

goes to „an individual in the motion picture industry whose technological contributions have brought credit to the industry.š

This year given to Edmund M. DiGiulio
 

The Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award:

is to „an individual in the motion pictaure industry whose humanitarian efforts have brought credit to the industry

THIS YEAR DIRECTOR ARTHUR HILLER TO RECEIVE.  He will be getting an Oscar statuette for his „long and productive career as a director and producer.š   He has participated in charitable organizations such as the Motion Picture and Television Fund, Amnesty International, the Deaf Arts Council,and  is often to be found participating in workshops at universities, film festivals, and many many many additional humanitarian events world wide. He has produced many films including, „Outrageous Fortuneš.  He was also the president of the Academy from 1993-1997.
 

The Scientific and Technical Awards:

 are given when there is an outstanding achievement that has been reached in the technical end of the movie business.  It can  be a piece of filmmaking equipment, a way of making film.  And the are for an innovation that has been used or been available for the most part throughout the movie industry∑not just for use in a single film.
 

Honorary Awards:

are for achievements that are not covered by the other categories.  Walt Disney received one for his bringing Mickey Mouse into the world and Akira Kurosawa for „making movies that have inspired audiences around the world.š

To be given this year to Robert Redford.  He will get a citation saying „Robert Redford Ų Actor, Producer, Creator of Sundance, inspiration to independent and innovative filmmakers everywhere.

He has been in over 30 films, such as „Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kidš , š The Stingš, „All the President‚s Menš , and had directed films such as „Quiz Showš, and Ordinary Peopleš.  He joins the ranks of previous honorees: Deborah Kerr, Federico Fellini, Hal Roach and many other movie greats.

Also to receive an Honorary Award this year is Sidney Poitier.

Twenty years after teaming up with Redford in Sneakers on the big screen, Sidney Poitier will join him on Oscar night as another honorary award recipient. Poitier, known for breaking down the social barriers between blacks and whites in the 50's and 60's, received his 1st Academy Award nomination for best actor in "The Defiant Ones" (1958), and became the first African American to win for a leading role with his Oscar for "Lilies of the Field" (1963). Currently on the USC School of Cinema-Television Board of Councilors, acclaimed Actor, Director, and Producer Sidney Poitier has also received the American Film Institute Life Achievement Award.
 

Special Achievement Awards :

are there for really great achievements for a specific film, for which there is no category to nominate that person in.  A previous receiver of this award was Toy Stoy‚s John Lasseter and his Pixar team, who brought us the first full length feature computer-animated film.
