It is vital to every working PA’s career to be on time, dress neatly and behave appropriately. Did I say Be On Time. One more time, Be On Time! Better yet, Be Early!
You must have a great running car. It is never a good idea to depend on public transportation or friends to get to and from productions. It is necessary to have a reliable way for people to communicate with you. A pager used to be the way to go, but it is now obsolete. A cell phone is a must in today’s fast paced world of entertainment. When they want you, they want you NOW! Phone calls must be returned immediately, as this shows professionalism.
Always show up to a production set with your own clipboard, supply of pens, paper and scissors. These are all the things that will be needed at some point in your workday. The faster you can produce these things the more valuable you become on the set.
It is also a good idea to carry a day planner or more ideally phone with a planner so you can record important facts about the producers, directors and assistant directors that you work with. If you know their likes, dislikes, even their birthdays etc, then you will be steps ahead of the competition.
As a PA, it is also important to have a current resume, as well as business cards. These will help in ”Networking” and are essential for future work in the industry.
